Happy Holidays!

December 17, 2022: Hi all. I'm still here, just been very busy (who of us is not?) I'm working on updating Maison Newton bit by bit, it's been awhile since I changed things up. Happy Holidays to all, soon the Winter Solstice will arrive and then the days will start to get longer once again, hooray!

Is Chartreuse the New Turquoise?

In going through the July/August 2012 House Beautiful (print edition) I noticed that there seemed to be more chartreuse and akin colors than I've seen before.  I scanned images from the magazine -- the color didn't come out exactly as it appears in the magazine, but I hope you'll get the general idea.  See what you think:
Ad for Lazy Boy featuring Brooke Shields.  The border around the ad
is chartreuse, the walls in the ad are chartreuse, Brooke is wearing a chartreuse
sweater, and the Charlotte chair is a chartreuse and olive green print.  The sofa,
from the Kiefer room group, is a pale chartreuse -- a little hard to tell from this scan.

Ad for Candice Olson for Kravet Collections.  The border on the ad is a sort of greyed-down
chartreuse color; the pillow on the sofa is chartreuse, and it's hard to tell but there is chartreuse
in the curtains.  Under lamp light (I'm looking at the ad in the magazine right next to my
laptop at about 4:23 p.m.) the top and bottom border on the ad look very green, almost
an olive green color!

A selection of jute rugs.  Anthropologie offers the entwined leave jute rug,
bottom right.  They call it "lime" - but we all know it's chartreuse!  5' x 7' for $398.

From the New York apartment of designers Bill Brockschmidt and Richard Gragisic.
The walls are painted "mustard olive" -- okay, chartreuse :)  The extravagant draperies
(not seen in this image), are also chartreuse lined in pale blue and to die for!
Notice the chartreuse-y color in the area rug.

    1. I have a couple of vintage-y decorating books by Mary Gilliatt out of England that I bought oh, geez, back in the early 1980's and they may already have been "dated" by then. Except, Mary was really good at showing a person what the color wheel was and how it worked. She was a big fan of what she called "yellowy-greenery," which combined various shades of green and yellow in harmony. Chartreuse is a blending of yellowy-greenery, in varying tones and shades! I am happy to see color -- coming back into decorating, not just in accessories, but actually in wall color and furniture upholstery and rugs. Maybe the pendulum swung too far in the direction of unrelenting WHITE! Ultimately, though, you are so right. We must decorate with what appeals to US best, whatever the trends and fads happen to be at the time, and then we will be happy and our surroundings will reflect that happiness. Thanks for posting!

  2. Oh I love all three pictures with all the colors. Esp. the last one you shared. I love color as you know! :) I know a lot of people love white and grays and do their WHOLE house in white...but we like to be different! COLOR makes us happy and don't get me wrong I think that all the WHITE some people do is beautiful too. Just not for us...we will be sharing more of our home and you'll see just how much we love color! LOL! I really am loving that bottom picture....lovely lovely! So with all these colors you see going on...is there a chance you'll be adding some of these colors to your home anytime soon?!

    1. Thanks so much for visiting, Erika. I am a big fan of your blog.

The article on the NY apartment that pic came from is just loaded with useful information and more beautiful photos of their space. Would you believe - that apartment is a mere 640 square feet! The issue was devoted to how to make a big impact in small spaces. I will do more scans and see if I can get an entire photo of that portion of the room -- there is a gallery wall that, for some reason, just did not come out on the scan (maybe I had the pic turned the wrong way???) Well, it's just so beautifully done. Of course, these dudes are decorators, but where there is a will, there is a way, and what someone has done before can be copied and done again! I am SO with you about color. So what am I planning on doing in my family room space? Going totally dark taupe and white, LOL! But I already have my celedon blue/green accents picked out and I'm going to throw in black and red too, just for the hell of it, cuz I love those colors :)
